Nintendo of America Asks: Who is Sony’s PSP Go For?

October 12th, 2009 No comments »

psp-goThe Christmas battle has commenced and Nintendo gaffer, Reggie Fils–Aime, has thrown of his gloves and slapped the Sony PSPgo firmly across the chops.

Reggie is known for telling it like he sees it – while he was having a go at the go he also took a quick swipe at the iPod Touch.

The PSPgo has been in the news, mainly regarding its price but Nintendo of America’s Reggie Fils-Aime has put his cards on the table when chatting with The Washington Post about the PSPgo.

Mr fils-Aime said, “I have the utmost respect for all our competitors, but it’s interesting to try and answer the consumer question of ‘What’s in it for me?’ in that product.”

and then went on to say that the PSPgo had a, “fundamental concept problem in terms of ‘Who’s it for?’ and ‘What’s the benefit?’”

He was then on a roll and got the iPod Touch in his sights.

Saying the he sees that the iPod touch continues to grow as a gaming platform but the Nintendo DS offered an experience that couldn’t be matched by Apple’s efforts.

Speaking of titles including Mario Kart and Scribblenauts, he said, “All of these experiences are very unique and very different and what you cannot find on their App Store.”

So – which do you favour and why?

iPod Touch, PSPgo or Nintendo DS/i?

Let me know :)

Steve Jobs Most Influential Person in Technology – Again

October 12th, 2009 No comments »

steve-jobsSteve Jobs has done it again.

The fruity CEO has been named the most influential person in the technology industry, topping the 2009 Agenda Setter’s list compiled by Silicon.com.

Jobsy is the only person in the award’s ten-year history to have topped the poll twice.

The expert panel praised Apple’s “IT desirability” and “continuous innovation”.

Other folk in the top ten club include Twitter co-founder Evan Williams, Google CEO Eric Schmidt and, of course, US President Barack Obama – that will go with his new Nobel Peace Prize.

Thanks to Mike for pointing me to Silicon.com – where you can read the full low down :)

Need to Take Meds? Get The Drugs to Text You When It’s Time

October 12th, 2009 No comments »

Intelligent_Bottle_CapsHere’s a tech way of reminding you to take your meds – get the drugs to text you.

These bottle tops will fire of an SMS to remind you that it’s time for you to take your pills.

Word is that these caps will also play jingles to coax you to get up and swallow your medicine.

If the bottle isn’t opened at the appointed time, the cap and night light start blinking to remind the owner to take the medication. If that doesn’t serve as enough of a hint, they start playing jingles as well. If the bottle stays unopened, the night light will send a message to Vitality’s system, which can then place an automated phone call or send a text message with a reminder.

A price for the new system hasn’t been disclosed. Vitality hopes insurance and drug companies will get on board with the system and cover the cost.

This system has already been given the support of AT&T and such so it looks like it’ll soon be bugging pill-poppers in the States.

So, no word on price yet but can you think of any other uses for these tops?

LG Shows Off Solar eBook eReader

October 12th, 2009 No comments »

lg-solar-ebookAs we enter the more autumnal months perhaps sitting in the park or on the beach reading whilst catching some rays isn’t the first thing that comes to mind.

But the solar-powered eBook from LG Display would love that you did :)

The 0.7 mm thin solar cell featured in the new eBook measures 10 centimeters in width and length and was developed to fit the 6 inch display panel for the current LG Display.

Put it out in the sun for between four to five hours and you’ll get a full day’s reading time.

Obviously you can read inside too, of course, thanks to the battery but that’s not going to flaunt your green cred now is it?

Mr. Ki Yong Kim, head of the Solar Cell Office at LG Display noted, “eBbooks are attracting a lot of attention because they offer the advantage of storing thousands of books’ worth of contents in an easy-to-carry device. The idea of e-book combined with solar cell will offer users the added benefit of longer usage. We will continue to provide users with enhanced convenience and value to solidify our lead in next-generation, environmentally friendly products.”

With the solar power and added battery back-up extended reading without having to pounce a power socket has to be a good thing?

What do you think?

Toshiba K02 Mobile Phone Looks to Nintendo DSi – Features 2 Touchscreens

October 12th, 2009 No comments »

Toshiba FynapocketHere’s a tasty looking Tosh.

Nope – it’s not Toshiba’s answer to the Nintendo DSi but a twin-screened mobile phone!

Say hi to the Toshiba K02 that slipped from under its covers at CEATAC in Japan this week.

Replacing the boring old QWERTY board appears to be another 3.5 inch touchscreen to match the other 3.5 inch touchscreen – That’s 7 inches of poking and prodding joy folks!

As for a spec sheet or anything like that for the K02; the only other details I am aware of is that it sounds like it’ll be running on Windows Mobile 6.5 and that at least one of the panels is resistive which is a bit of a downer.

What that does mean is, like the DSi, you’ll be tapping it with a stylus.

Any points of view?

Let me know below :)

iPhone OS 3.1.2 Wakes Up Your Apple Handset From Coma

October 12th, 2009 No comments »

iPhone-ComaI know that my 3Gesus phone and those of my two bandmates have all been hit by the coma so we’re pretty happy that this minor update to the iPhone OS should fix some that and the other annoying issues that some users have been having.

Also it will stop Rom from being so smug with his BlackBerry!

Apple say that they’ve fixed three bugs in the latest iPhone OS with an update issued via iTunes.

According to Apple, the update addresses three issues:

  • A “sporadic issue” that prevents the iPhone from waking from sleep (which may be iPhone coma)
  • An “intermittent issue” that kills the mobile network until you restart the phone
  • A bug that causes the “occasional crash” while streaming video

We’re gonna hit this up tonight – have you had any problems?

Are they fixed now?

Let me know.

“Holy Crap” New YouTube Logo Celebrates 1 Billion Streams a Day

October 12th, 2009 No comments »

logo_holy_crap_1bn_a_day-vfl124472You may notice a slight change in the YouTube logo.

Google announced that its video-sharing site is now slinging out over 1 billion video streams a day.

They’re also celebrating the 3rd anniversary of them snapping up the video service for a mere $1.65bn.

But back then it was dealing up a tiny 100 million streams a day – now it hits that mark every two hours.

Commenting on the news, CEO and co-founder of YouTube Chad Hurley said, “This is a great moment in our short history and we owe it all to you.”

So – pats on the back all round – they’re obviously taking all this in their stride.

Why do I say that?

The little funsters have named the new logo’s filename:  ‘logo_holy_crap_1bn_a_day-vfl124472.png‘.

It may be getting even bigger as The Telegraph reported that Channel 4 and YouTube are close to signing a deal to bring Channel 4’s full-length shows to the site in the UK for free.

Foursquare Social Gaming Comes to London – Earn Points and Badges by Eating, Drinking and Partying Round the Capital

October 12th, 2009 No comments »

Foursquare logoFoursquare has announced that it’s bringing its location-based social networking game here to London.

The service that started in March awards points and badges for experiencing things in certain locations and is apparently quite the hit over in the USA but remains pretty much unknown on this side of the pond.

Foursquare is a location service-based social network/game.

It’s kinda what would happen if you mashed up Google Lattitude with a pinch of Facebook, a teaspoon of Twitter, a drop of Qype and perhaps a little splash of any particular online multiplayer game that suits your taste.

In effect it’ll tell you where your friends are and help add a little extra fun to going out around the city and you can play via iPhone and Android apps as well as a web interface for other devices.

The only other Euro city that will be getting Foursquare at the mo is Amsterdam.

How this thing works is centred around “checking-in“.

You can check-in from any kind of nightspot, watering hole or eatery and it allows you to drop a quickie message about where you are and what you’re doing (kinda Twitter/Facebook update stylee) and the system will then register what you’re up to.

Friends will then get a message to let them know your whereabouts and what you’re doing so that they can either come and hook up with you or be thankful that you’re somewhere else whilst they’re talking about your “little problem”.

The other side of this deal is when you can’t face another night of reality TV or shooting things on your console you can have a nosey at what your mates are doing and crash their party – the one you weren’t invited to because of the innocent incident involving the yukka plant, the twin sisters your best friend arrived with and the cheese sauce.

It will also allow you to create a to-do-list of places you’ve always wanted to go and add to a Top 12 list of your recommendations for other people.

The gaming element is that you get points for checking-in.

This obviously makes things competitive (in a fun way) and also gets the system running and keeps people coming back. You get a point for checking in, you get five points if it happens to be from a place you’ve never checked-in from before; a further point if it’s the second, third, fourth etc place of the evening; and another still for checking-in multiple nights in a row – yup: score points on that pub crawl!!  There’s another excuse for you right there folks ;)

You can only get points for checking-in outside of work hours, much to your bosses relief – but you’re always eligible for the five discovery points no matter what time of day it is. RAH!

There’s a leader board of the top 12 rankers (I said RANKERS!) and if you check-in from the same place more times and more regularly than anyone else you could get crowned Mayor of that gaff on the site.

You can also earn badges when you check-in – similar to the achievements in World of Warcraft and Left4Dead.

There’s badges for the number of times you’ve checked-in to new establishments from Newbie up to Superstar and then a whole gamut of other seemingly random titles to win. The dev team are working on more and taking suggestions for all sorts of new badges.

While you’re playing there’s a more serious side……

It sounds all very fun but while you’re being crowned as an alcoholic/Mayor of The Intrepid Fox the owners of the service are gathering data that should help identify the best spots to go in the cities that Foursquare is played.

Think of the content that Qype produces and you can see the power.

Could we start to see Foursquare badges displayed in the window of our favourite boozers and restaurants in the future? With all that data the options are open to what’s done with it or who it’s sold on to.

If you want to have a go nip over to the site and sign up with a free profile that will obviously as you for your mobile number so it can ping you with what your friends are doing.

Before you do so just make sure that you’re in Amsterdam, Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Chicago, Dallas / Fort Worth, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis / St. Paul, New York City, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Portland, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Washington, D.C. and now London!

Oh and if you’re not using the app for Android, iPhone and the ones soon to drop for BlackBerry and the Palm Prea – just make sure that you have a kind and decent SMS package on your price plan else you may not have the cash for your round.

Seeing as London has made a reputation for itself as being the Twitter capital perhaps Foursquare will be welcomed likewise.  One person that’s banking on such popularity is none-other than Digg founder Kevin Rose who has chipped in with some investment.

It has lots going for it –  It’s not like you can ever be short of things to do in London – if you’re unsure about where to go or what to see there’s always the Spoonfed and Yell.com apps to help you out ;)

Tiny Funai Projector Makes Any Wall Multitouch

October 12th, 2009 No comments »

Funai Multitouch Projector ScannerFunai has an added bonus in their pico projector – the ability to make any surface multitouch.

This prototype uses a Nippon Signal MEMS scanner and a heap of clever tech that when all combined is able to throw multitouch capabilities to whatever surface the projected image hits!

Just think, bedroom wall, office whiteboard, your desk – wherever that image is projected live you can count on that surface having multitouch capabilities.

Users are able to simply twist and turn the image in order to have it modified in real-time

Check out Engadget’s vid below to see it in action – they expect the tech to go commercial sometime next year.
